Our September Speaker, Bob Garver, Founder, Wicked Joe and Bard Coffee

Our next Quarterly Meeting will take place on Saturday, September 16th at the Woodlands Club, beginning at 9 AM.  The reservation form can be found on page 3.  The speaker will be Bob Garver, who with his wife, Carmen, are the team behind Wicked Joe and Bard Coffee.  They are winners of the 2017 Mainebiz Leaders of the Year Award in the small-business category.  Bob is a West Point graduate and Army veteran, having served 12 years active duty with assignments in Oklahoma, Texas, California, Turkey, and Washington, DC.  The Garvers moved with their three small children to Maine from California in 2003.  The following year they started Wicked Joe Coffee, an organic coffee roasting business in Brunswick.  Ten years later, in 2014, they shifted their operation into the former commissary building on the old Naval Air Station.  Bob and Carmen’s coffee business has grown steadily over the past decade, averaging 10 to 30 percent increases each year.  Bob says his leadership icon is Joshua Chamberlain, “an incredible natural leader, a Mainer, a scholar, and a soldier who answered his country’s call.”  Please join us on September 16th and meet the Garvers.

COLA Watch Update

The July Consumer Price Index (DPI) was 238.617, 1.5 percent above the FY 2016 COLA baseline.  The CPI for August is scheduled to be released on September 14, 2017.  The 2018 COLA will be based on the CPI average from July through September.  If the trend holds, the odds are that we will have a COLA increase next year.  Stay tuned over the next two months to be sure.
